Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM) offers 128 potential students from low-income families of RM3,000 and below and the poor to pursue a Bachelor's degree through the inclusion of special lanes provided by the university.
The programme is known as the bottom 40 percent (Bawah 40 peratus/B40) has been introduced by the Ministry of Higher Education to be implemented in Public Universities (UA) in Malaysia.
Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM) has also introduced a dual-degree program starting from the 2016/2017 academic session at Dewan Tuanku Chancellor of the university's in response to the call from the Minister of Higher Education, Datuk Seri Idris Jusoh in providing flexible education to students.
USIM's Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic and International), Prof. Dr. Zulkiple Abd. Ghani said that this year the university is offering three dual degree programs to qualified students.
"They will be offered during the fifth semester to pursue a second degree programme based on academic achievements and qualifications. The course duration is five years, two years for the first undergraduate programme and the following three years to get a second degree.
"In addition to meeting the market needs in the professional field, USIM aims to provide students with multiple disciplines in theology and strengthen the focus on memorizing 30 chapters of the Quran," he said.
Courses to be offered in the dual degree programme are Bachelor of Counselling with Bachelor of Quran and Sunnah; Bachelor of Science (Food Science and Technology) with a Bachelor of Fiqh and Fatwa, and a Bachelor of Computer Science (Information Security and Assurance) with a Bachelor of Quran and Sunnah.
