Filling out an application form for public university admissions can be confusing and sometimes nerve-wracking. To help simplify this process, Afterschool.my is sharing some quick tips, helpful information and available courses for diploma holders.

Key Takeways
  • Check Course Requirements
Ensure your results meet the minimum prerequisites for your chosen courses by consulting university websites or contacting institutions directly to avoid disqualification.

  • Prioritise Top Choices
List your preferred courses and universities in the first few options on the application form to increase your chances of securing your desired spot.

  • Familiarise Yourself with Offerings
Review available courses and their details in the application form to make informed decisions and maximise your admission prospects.

In the online application form, institutions are categorised into two - primary and secondary public universities. The first category includes four universities. These are Universiti Malaya (UM), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) and Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM).

The second category includes Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI), Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM), Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM), Universiti Sultan Zainal Abidin (UniSZA), Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM), Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT), Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), Universiti Malaysia Pahang (UMP), Universiti Malaysia Kelantant (UMK), Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP), Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM), Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS), Universiti Islam Antarabangsa Malaysia (UIAM) and Universiti Pertahanan Nasional Malaysia (UPNM).

  • Do I meet the minimum requirements of the course?
Before selecting a course, make sure to check out the prerequisites of that course. This can be done by checking the university's website, which usually provides information about the course and the requirements. In case the institution's website doesn't provide this information, it would be best to give the institution a phone call. Compare the subject requirements with your actual results; if your results don't meet the subject requirements, do not select this course because you will not be considered, especially in prestigious universities.
  • What are my priority courses and institutions?
Your top priorities should be reflected in your first two to three choices.  It should be indicated orderly or else you will end up getting the course you are uninterested in. Some students assume that it would be safe to put their top choices in the third or fourth box because it increases their chances of getting it. Moreover, if you are determined to get into your preferred university, it would be wise to select similar courses of the same faculty.
  • How familiar am I with the courses that are being offered?
