  • Students of University of Malaya (UM) can now pursue their Bachelor’s in Accounting while working on their ACCA qualification at Sunway-TES, a subsidiary of Sunway Education Group.
  • This is made possible through a programme that fast track accounting. It was developed by the Faculty of Business and Accountancy of UM, Sunway-TES and the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA).
  • Sunway-TES’ ACCA Professional Certification via the Structured Internship Programme (SIP) bridges the gap between the syllabus of a Bachelor’s degree and that of a professional qualification.
  • Third year UM students interested to fast track accounting must demonstrate good potential to take up ACCA Qualification concurrently. They can take up to five papers – three core and two optional – in a span of two years before they graduate under the programme. They will complete one paper per semester and finish two more while they undergo their six-moth internship at participating accounting firms.
  • ACCA course fees will be fully sponsored by participating employers which includes the Sunway Group, AFTAAS, KHR and the Big 5 Professional services firms, namely BDO, Deloitte, Ernst & Young, KPMG and PwC. Students will also be offered internship placements.
  • The fast track accounting programme is said to be timely because it addresses talent shortages within the industry. Malaysia currently has 29,000 qualified accountants and will need 79,000 by 2020.
  • Besides creating a talent pool of qualified accountants in Malaysia, the accounting course programme will attract more foreign students to UM’s campus.
