As reported by Utusan Online there is an increase number of women being victimized by Love Scams.
The Deputy Director of Intelligence Operations and Commercial Crimes Investigation Department (CCID) Bukit Aman, Senior Assistant Commissioner, Roslan Abd. Wahid said as many as 407 women reported being victims to online scams since the 1st January up until recently, with a loss of RM19.2 million.
Criminology Expert of Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), Dr. Mohammad Rahim Kamaluddin said that victims are willing to spend millions of ringgit to get a certain gift that is offered as a token of friendship between them.
Meanwhile, Vice Chairman of the Malaysia Crime Prevention Foundation (MCPF), Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye said that authorities should think about a new approach to reach out to young women, due to the less effective existing strategy.
He added that although most of the victims are women, but men are not spared to be the victim of a Love Scam. Lee Lam Tye advised the public not to easily believe or make deals with new contacts.
