There are a lot of misconceptions about skill-based programmes such as Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programmes. The majority who thinks students undergoing TVET are those who did not do well in their exams, thus ended up here, will be surprised at the latest announcement on the ‘CGC SME Apprentice Scheme’ or CGC SAS. This scheme focuses on TVET graduates to develop their skills for the current job market while encouraging them to explore entrepreneurship in the country.

Credit Guarantee Corp Malaysia Bhd (CGC) introduced the Apprentice Scheme to provide on-the-job training skills and assist unemployed TVET graduates to secure a one-year working engagement at small and medium entreprises (SMEs).

An article by The Star published that the apprentice scheme is different from the rest as CGC will pay 90% of the cost, which includes monthly salaries, employment benefits and statutory contributions while the remaining 10% will be borne by the participating SMEs. CGC will be forking out more than RM500,000 as part of its corporate responsibility. Its efforts in encouraging more TVET graduates to venture into entrepreneurship will greatly increase the number of jobs, competition in the job market and promoting sustainable growth in the greater economy, hence being in sync with the country’s aspirations to be a fully developed nation by 2020.

The CGC SAS was launched on May 2017 and will end on May 2018 in hopes that more students will opt for TVET colleges and eventually become entrepreneurs in the future. The SMEs are in businesses such as agro-based manufacturer, civil or electrical contractor, construction, green technology, human resource agency, IT solutions, laundry services and the oil and gas industry. 7 Skills to Learn If You Want a Good Job10 Skills in Demand and Where to Learn Them
