Tun Dr Mahathir honoured at UUM Alumni hi-tea ceremony

To commemorate the 30 years of the establishment of Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM), the 4th Prime Minister , Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad was honoured at the Alumni Hi- Tea Ceremony : An Evening With Tun Dr Mahathir at Istana Hotel , Kuala Lumpur recently .

UUM Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Dato ' Wira Dr. Mohamed Mustafa Ishak was present to welcome Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad and his wife, Tun Dr. Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali.

In his speech Dr. Mahathir expressed great pride with the accomplishments achieved by UUM since its establishment 30 years ago. To date, UUM has produced well over 100,000 successful alumni in the respective fields of management. These alumni who are flung far and near have created many successes both locally and internationally.

He said the establishment of UUM was timely as the country was in need of an institution of higher learning that focuses on the area of management, a field which was highly sought after at the time.

"When I was the Prime Minister, it dawned on me that the country was in need of an institution that could educate Malaysians on management.

"I am confident that with efficient management, all work will be better organised and the possibility for success is far greater , " he said.

Tun Dr. Mahathir also expressed his confidence that the immense contribution made by UUM in the field of management will help spur better management practices amongst administrators, managers and CEOs in managing state and country affairs as well as business in the country and abroad. Hence, UUM is well on its way to becoming the eminent management university.

The hi-tea ceremony was held in conjunction with the 30th anniversary of UUM. The event which was organised by the Student Affairs and Alumni Department also successfully attracted a total of 180 alumni.

Since its inception, UUM has produced both local and international graduates of various levels of learning. As such this demonstrates UUM achievements in producing outstanding graduates to meet the human resource needs of the job market locally as well as abroad.

Such achievements are evident namely in the success of many alumni who hold key positions in the corporate as well as the government sector and alumni who have made name for themselves in politics and business.

During a question and answer session, Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad graciously shared his experiences and ideas on ways to further develop UUM while answering questions posed by the alumni.

Meanwhile, Dato' Md Nizam Sheriff , the Executive Director of Maya Maju Sdn. Bhd. , expressed his happiness to be reunited with old friends as well as delight on being an alumnus of UUM.

He also expressed confidence that UUM could achieve its vision and mission of becoming the eminent management university.

Also present at the ceremony were the member of the University Board of Directors, Dato ' Paduka Abdul Rahman Ibrahim; members of the University Management Committee , Deputy Vice -Chancellor ( Academic and International ) , Prof. Dr. Hassan Ali and Deputy Vice -Chancellor (Student Affairs and Alumni ) , Assoc. Prof. Dr. Abdul Malek Abdul Karim.
