Brickfields Asia College (BAC) announced its commitment to train teachers at refugee schools today as it signs a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) this morning.
The MoU took place this morning in the presence of representatives from the two parties as well as the Lariche Community and members of the press. The MoU highlights the need for the government, organisations and schools to address issues faced by refugee groups that have limited or no access to formal education in the country.
The UNHCR representative Richard Towle at the ceremony said that agreements like this will aid an estimated 155,000 refugees who currently need support in Malaysia, where refugee children face difficulties in attending public schools in Malaysia.
"The help from Brickfields [Asia College] will go a long way in this area," he said, adding that it is important to construct a supportive environment to help refugee children attain higher academic achievements.
BAC Managing Director and Senior Lecturer Raja Singham also shared that the institution would draw on its experience of teaching students as well as training other teachers in the past. According to him, the college will use its resources to train volunteer teachers at refugee schools in Malaysia.
The leading law school in Malaysia has continued to organise and support numerous education-based efforts to help communities gain access to education. Among them is Edunation, an online portal providing free tuition to all Malaysian students.
