Selling is not purely an intellectual exercise. Sellers are emotional human beings, which is why great salespeople are great at empathising with the customer's moods and emotions through listening and observing as well as knowing what the customer might need.
Like engineers, successful sales people are great at problem solving. Getting a product or idea sold isn't just the sole interest of a sales person, they see the customer's situation as it really is and then attempt to create solutions to satisfy the customer's needs, both financial (return of investment) and emotional (need to be convinced that the product is reliable).
