  • More teachers committed to making improvements and preparing students to face future challenges are needed
  • Research is an important mechanism to gauge the pros and cons of various teaching methods
More emphasis is placed on teachers to give more attention for research skills. According to Dr Mohamad Nor Mohamad Taib, Director of the Malaysian Teachers Education Institute, teachers who are active in research turn out to be better in their profession.
Research implies reflection on one's own teaching, being informed about the latest developments, and contributing actively to increasing the evidence-based nature of teaching practices.
He said only through action research, teachers could bring a new paradigm in teaching and learning in the classroom, thus encouraging two ways communication between teachers and students.
“Our education system must be good to our students and not to the teachers."
"Teachers must keep in mind that teaching always involves students’ learning. If teachers only teach, and the students do not know anything, then this education is useless,” he emphasised during the opening seminar organised by the Teachers Education Institute Rajang Campus at RH Hotel, last weekend. Some scholars define a "research-active teacher" as someone who collaborates, inquires and improves their own practices. Others define it as teachers who are involved in academic research projects, mostly data gathering, guided by professional researchers.
During the seminar, a total of 112 teachers presented the results of their research. Presenting the various papers were lecturers from Universiti Malaya, Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris, Universiti Putra Malaysia, Universiti Sains Malaysia and Open University Malaysia.
