  • Big projects await for skilled, industry-ready animators

Malaysia's visual effects companies are receiving global recognition, including the recent Oscars for Life of Pi. Despite this huge success, this industry is facing a shortage of talent and those already working are not up to mark.

According to Yoki Chin, president of Post Production Animation and Creative Content Association of Malaysia (Postam), big projects remain aplenty but talent pool is shrinking.

Fresh graduates were not production-ready, said Hasnul Hadi Samsudin, senior manager of Rhythm and Hues which made the special effects for Life of Pi and Snow White and the Huntsmen.  He said that graduates had to be trained for three to nine months to become a specialist.

To help enrich training, Multimedia Development Corporation (MDeC) and National Film Development Corporation Malaysia (Finas) are bringing artists from overseas to train locals, including lecturers. They have also introduced a 30 per cent rebate incentive for overseas production companies to invest in Malaysian talent.
