Kenyah student, Chris Deng Vinsien, from Baram, Sarawak, makes his community proud by being the first ethnic student to be accepted into the reputable Oxford University. He received his offer in early August to pursue his law degree in the university.
He thanks his family and elders for help achieving everything that he has thus far saying, “I’ll try my best not to squander this opportunity. This new challenge is no longer an adventure for myself alone, but a journey with all of you Sarawakian boys and girls out there who, like me, want to prove that even humble people in Sarawak can make it big.”
In a Facebook post on August 21, Chirs said, “My siblings (Christal Along and Moses Lenjau) are my main competitions, setting the standards high for me from the very start. I am who I am because of these people, whom I hold dear to my heart.”
Chris is set to study law at Magdalen College, Oxford University in the UK in October. According to the QS World University Rankings’ annual publication, Oxford is the best university in Europe and second in the world following the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the US.
Chris was brought up in Bintulu and went to a boarding school during secondary school, he then attended Maktab Rendah Sains Mara Mukah and pursued his A-levels at Kolej Yayasan UEM in Lembah Beringin, Selangor.
His achievements have gone viral and have been shared on many social media sites with Chris receiving congratulations from several people.
Bulan Kuchang Chin posted: “You are truly an inspiration and we are extremely proud of you and your achievement. Keep doing the best and may God Almighty bless you while you study abroad. We pray for you. Bawa bawa ‘lepo’ ilu (Make our community proud).”
