Reigning Champ in TaxPOD Challenge 2024

Ooi Wei Xuen, a Bachelor of Business (Hons) Accounting and Finance student, emerged as the Champion of the TaxPOD Challenge 2024. Organised by YYC, a leading tax advisory and accounting firm in Malaysia and Singapore, the competition took place on 14 September 2024 and saw top undergraduate and postgraduate students from local and international institutions compete for the coveted title.

The competition consists of two rounds. The first round is an online assessment with 50 multiple-choice tax questions, and the top 10 scorers advance to the final round. “As a finalist, I had one hour to prepare a slide deck for a tax-related case study, which I then presented to a panel of judges from YYC.,” said Wei Xuen.

When asked about his motivation to win, he said: “I could not have done it without the motivation of my loved ones who reminded me to give my best in the competition. In addition, the support I got from my lecturers were invaluable. They provided me with important tips, materials and advice as I prepared for the competition. I am also very grateful for their help in always clearing any doubts I had and this boosted my confidence and preparation for the final round.,” he said.

The young lad from Chung Ling High School, Penang had a challenging journey in his quest to be the Champion. “The most significant challenge was my packed schedule. On top of preparing for the finals, I also had to allocate time to prepare for tests and assignments. However, staying focused and adopting a proactive mindset enabled me to navigate these challenges effectively without fear,” he added.

Another TAR UMT student, Ng Fu Hui pursuing the Diploma in Accounting was named as the Second Runner-up winner in the competition.
