The senate has passed the Private Higher Education Institutions (amendment) Bill 2014 to allow Malaysia to become a regional education hub.
The new bill amends the Private Higher Educational Institutions 1996 (Act 555). With the new changes, the new bill aims:
- to tighten quality monitoring and control of all local private institutions and encourage the liberalisation of the sector
- to allow international institutions of higher learning to open up branch campuses in Malaysia
- to utilise new technologies and best practises that would benefit the country
- to provide more opportunities for students to pursue higher education in private institutions
