The placement of new teachers will be implemented in stages and according to current demand, said Deputy Education Minister P. Kamalanathan. This is in response to graduates who have not been placed as teachers after waiting for a long time.
Last year, the Education Ministry announced plans to drop the job guarantee given to trainees from Teacher Training Institutes (IPG) and public institutions of higher learning (IPTA). Previously, trainee teachers from IPG and IPTA are guaranteed jobs as teachers without considering their performance. With the proposed change, only candidates who are passionate with the job will be offered the opportunity.
The Education Ministry had placed some teachers last June, and the rest would be placed in September and January next year. About 1,595 candidates were interviewed by the Education Service Commission in March. These candidates would be placed in September.
Their placement was performed to fill the vacancy of teachers who had retired and based on current demand in secondary schools based on the graduates options, the statement said.
