  • Over 400 Malaysian medical students are calling on the government to allow them to do their internship in Australia

A group of over 400 Malaysian medical students on scholarship in Australia has filed an appeal  to government to allow them to have their internship in Australia.  This petition, initiated by University of Newcastle student Mohamed Edhsan Ebrahim, cites a 2009 report that there were 1,134 medical students studying in Australia.  Each student spends about RM960,000.

Education is one of Australia's income-generating sectors which contributed AS16.3 billion (RM52.6 billion) for 2010/11 financial year.

Furthermore, he was quoted by the Sun Daily that some 200 medical students graduating from Australian universities are without internships.

Internship is a requirement for all medical practitioners and these students return to Malaysia for internship, adding to the large number of local graduates doing internships in local hospitals.

Most of these students are scholars of MARA and  PSD.  Hence, scholarship fund must be used to send students to institutions that guarantee internship opportunities.
