In recent times, with fraudulent connoisseurs have been rampant in Malaysia, with stories on netizens being conned, both young and old flooding the tabloids. Therefore, it would never, ever be a wise decision to share your bank information to a stranger via any means, especially over Twitter. Unless of course, that person happens to be Nicki Minaj (A verified account, of course).

What started off as a competition to fly selected fans from anywhere in the world to the Billboard Music Awards Show, turned into an unexpected scholarship application process, with just one tweet. Nicki Minaj (real name Onika Tanya Maraj) did not think twice when a fan cheekily asked, “Well you wanna pay for my tuition?”, emphatically responding with, “Show me straight A's that I can verify w/ur school and I'll pay it.”

While the general reaction was initially met caution, many thinking it was all a ruse, Nicki did not back down, and only asked for proof of good grades and admission slips, before agreeing to help out.

Cue the floods of tweets that her account was then bombarded with, students from all walks of life asking and hoping to get Nicki’s attention to help pay off any partial or full tuition fees they still had withstanding. One student even asked for a professional camera as he was studying audio visual media in college, to which Nicki calmly responded with, “How much is the camera?”.

All in all, based on her Twitter feed alone, Nicki Minaj agreed to help around 24 lucky students, all of whom were asked to Direct Message her their account information. Sadly, for anyone here who wants to apply, Minaj ‘closed’ applications, but assured that she would do the whole thing again in a month or two.

It’s quite remarkable to see someone as successful as Minaj, who has received ten Grammy nominations throughout her career, and won six American Music Awards, eleven BET Awards, three MTV Video Music Awards and four Billboard Music Awards, be so generous to the public almost on a whim, a rather refreshing gesture from a famous celebrity. Here’s hoping some Malaysian celebrities follow suit and decide to blow up their Twitter feed with a similar gesture. And if they do, rest assured you’ll hear it here first, on afterschool.my
