To boost the country's sports development, the Higher Education Ministry together with other relevant agencies and bodies will establish a sports talent search committee. Those student athletes recruited under this committee will also be encouraged to enrol in any of the local universities under the minimum requirement as part of the encouragement to them. The Ministry believes there is a pool of sports talents among student athletes who can be polished and made ready to compete in high-impact sports like fencing, diving, shooting, taekwondo and so on.The Ministry has set a 30% target for national athletes to represent the country at international-class sports events to come from the public higher learning institutions (IPTAs)."To date we already have several names who have competed at the international level and they are student athletes," said Ministry Deputy Secretary-General (Management) Datuk Haji Omar Abdul Rahman, adding the Ministry is collaborating with Malaysian University Sports Council (Masum) in achieving the set target. To a question, he said they have achieved about 22% to 25% of the target so far and expected to fully achieve it by 2015.Among the efforts made to achieve the target are providing incentives like education scholarships to student athletes to further their studies at university level, he said, adding so far more than 100 student athletes have been given such scholarship. The Ministry has set a target to provide such a scholarship to 400 student athletes and it is opened to those who are active in sports and meet the minimum requirement, he added.Apart from that, he said the Ministry also provides certain amount of financial assistance to each of the IPTAs for its physical sports development."Each of the IPTAs has also been appointed as a centre of excellence for specific/focus sport, this is our way to develop and create experts in such a specific sport," he said.
