  • Less than 20% of the 472, 541 students took Science subjects
  • Free books, tax relief for parents and study grants could help increase interest in Science
The Education Ministry has set up a special committee to encourage more students to take up Science subjects.
Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said the committee comprises experts and academicians that will assist the ministry in drafting an action plan to overcome the situation.
Muhyiddin said only 20% of the 472, 541 students who sat for Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia SPM were science stream students.
“The less than 20 per cent figure is nowhere near the ministry’s projected 60 per cent Science and technical and 40 perc ent Arts students So we have to increase it to 60 per cent ” he said after visiting students who were sitting for SPM examination at SMK Taman Kosas Ampang, yesterday.
The deputy prime minister said the committee had yesterday based on its initial study made 15 recommendations that would be studied by the ministry to increase the number of science student. Among these recommendations include free books, tax relief for parents and more study grants. By 2014, student intake of science subjects is expected to increase by another 10%.
“Just like any developing nation Malaysia needs experts in the fields of engineering science medicine and other technological sectors. The drop in interest in Science subjects may stunt efforts to improve technological innovations to make Malaysia a high income nation ” he said.
Factors that contributed to the drop was lack of support from parents, lack of qualified teachers and lack of laboratories in schools.
