Data scientists are said to be the most in-demand specialists of the future. The global demand for data scientists is estimated to reach 220,000 by 2017. Anticipating this need, Malaysia is helping develop homegrown talents through projects such as this Big Data Comptency Centre, a joint initiative between the Ministry of Education and Prestariang Group.
Dato’ Seri Idris Jusoh, Minister of Education II launched the first phase of the Big Data Competency Centres in Malaysia across 4 universities and 1 polytechnic in Malaysia - Universiti Utara Malaysia, Kedah (UUM), Universiti Sains Malaysia, Penang (USM), Universiti Malaysia Terengganu, Terengganu (UMT), Universiti Malaysia Sarawak, Sarawak (UNIMAS) and Politeknik Ibrahim Sultan, Johor (PIS).
The Big Data Competency Centres will provide a training platform to cultivate and drive talents towards supporting and strengthening the global growth of the Big Data industry today. This initiative was to heed the Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Najib Tun Razak’s call for the development of more data scientists in Malaysia to spearhead the country’s development towards a data-driven economy.
This initiative also recognises University Malaysia of Computer Science & Engineering (UniMy) as the official Academic Partner which is responsible for the provision of training with Big Data certification. The 7 courses offered via the industry partnership will see an entry of new talents with Big Data expertise in the employment market. This would include Technical Professionals for Big Data Solutions, Data Scientists, DB Administrator/Developers, Big Data Analysts and others.
