National Accounting Quiz (NAQ) 2014 competition set to attract more than 2,000 participants

MIA and Sunway TES, joint forces to organise the National Accounting Quiz for secondary schools students nationwide

As part of its strategic thrust to promote accountancy as a profession of choice among students, the Malaysian Institute of Accountants (MIA) together with Sunway TES are organising the biggest accounting quiz in the country, the National Accounting Quiz 2014 (NAQ 2014). More than 2000 students are expected to participate in this event.

The competition which is supported by the Ministry of Education (MoE), and conducted on-line, is opened to all secondary school students, who are currently in their fourth and fifth forms. Registration to participate in this competition can be done online at www.accoutingquiz.my beginning 1st April until 20th April 2014.

MIA president Johan Idris said, `Besides the numbers, MIA together with Sunway TES recognise the importance of NAQ 2014 as a life skill project providing students with the opportunity to apply the accounting knowledge which they have learnt in school in their day to day routine. In fact, through this initiative we hope students will be able to leverage their knowledge in the accountancy field, have better understanding about the career and find out more about the rewarding opportunities that awaits them.

`We encourage students who aspire to map up a successful journey in their career to use the accountancy profession as the launching pad to excel further,” Johan said

“Accountancy is a career that offers countless opportunities. Every organisation depends on accountants and many Malaysians and world’s top business people are accountants. This means if there is an industry that appeals to the youth; accountancy will be the right platform for the way forward”, Johan added.

Zainudin Abas, Director of Co-Curricular and Arts Division, Ministry of Education Malaysia said that MoE was delighted to be supporting MIA and Sunway TES on this initiative.

“Guided by the National Education Policy, MOE’s role is to ensure our education system prepares our students to become knowledgeable and competent professionals thus matching business needs. We are confident that through NAQ 2014, it will help to nurture students with the necessary skills and knowledge to prepare them to meet future challenges.

Teo Ee Sing, Executive Director of Sunway TES Centre for Accountancy Excellence and Sunway College said, “Participants of the Quiz is expected to reinforce their accounting concepts, and for those who have excelled in their SPM and wish to pursue studies at Sunway TES will be provided financial assistance. The main top three prize winners will be receiving scholarships to study accountancy at Sunway TES. The Quiz itself stimulates their passion for accounting and we at Sunway TES will of course welcome them to join us.”

This beyond classroom activity is aimed to promote and accelerate better understanding about the accounting knowledge among students in a virtual and fun manner.

NAQ 204 will be conducted in five stages. The first, four stages will be conducted online and the final stage will be conducted live at Sunway College on 13th September 2014. The top three winners of the NAQ 2014 will be presented with scholarships and financial assistance worth more than RM200,000 to study accountancy at Sunway College.

The inaugural competition was held last year and only opened to secondary schools students in Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya. A total of 51 secondary schools with 154 teams, each comprising four members, took part in the competition last year
