Najib to hold meeting on UEC recognition

  • With the aim of improving Chinese education of Malaysia, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak will convene a meeting with the Higher Education Ministry and Education Ministry.

The meeting would find a solution acceptable to all, based on a joint-press statement by Najib and the United Chinese School Committees' Association of Malaysia (Dong Zong).

On April 1, Dong Zong and Najib met to discuss and exchange ideas on the betterment of Chinese education in Malaysia at the Prime Minister's office.

The meeting, among others, had touched on the issue concerning the recognition of the UEC, which relates to the application to enter public institutions of higher education (IPTA).

It said there was a discussion which required students from Chinese medium schools to have at least a credit in Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia's (SPM) Bahasa Malaysia paper along with the UEC, as a condition for application into IPTA.

There was also a discussion on the issue of accreditation of the UEC Bahasa Malaysia subject, it reported.
