More engineers and scientists are needed to achieve Malaysia's Vision 2020

Seven years from now, there'll be more research scientists and engineers (RSE). For every 10,000 people, 72 of them are research scientists and engineers.

Currently, the ratio is 58.2: 10,000.

Malaysia's population is expected to hit 35 million by 2020. With that said, it's estimated that 252,000 RSE will be needed in that time.

This government move to boost the number of RSE is expected to propel the country's leadership in science and technology.

However, the popularity of science subjects has been waning among schoolchildren and that more preferred to take arts stream, observes Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

Since 2006, students taking science subjects has decreased. In 20111, the percentage of secondary school students taking science stream was only 44.01 per cent.

To help make science interesting to students, the government has made campaigns such as the recent "Innovation Decade 2010-2020", an exhibition that exposes students to science and technology outside the confines of a classroom.
