MMU Students Champion Sustainability with Inspiring Community Efforts

A group of undergraduate students enrolled in the course LSSW6112: Sustainable Society, has taken proactive steps to promote sustainability on campus through an inspiring project titled “Green Guardians: Recycling for a Sustainable Earth.” The project, guided by course advisor Mdm. Kerk Peck Hoon, aims to raise awareness of sustainable practices within the MMU community. With four key objectives, the initiative focuses on educating students and staff about waste reduction, reducing single-use plastics, promoting environmentally friendly alternatives, and fostering lasting behavioral changes for sustainability.

The program kicked off on 9 December 2024 with an insightful talk on environmental protection delivered by Mdm. Kerk. Following this, the students brainstormed and devised campaigns emphasising the proper use of recycling bins, the importance of saving paper, and minimizing single-use plastic consumption.

To ensure effective implementation, the students were divided into three groups, each tasked with organising activities to promote their cause. Campaigns were held on 11 and 18 December 2024 at the entrance of the Faculty of Business (FOB) building, strategically located near the recycling bins.

An interactive “Pop Quiz” was conducted during the campaign to engage participants and evaluate their understanding of recycling principles. Alongside this, the students visited campus food courts and cafés to collect discarded plastic cups, demonstrating proper recycling practices. They also took the opportunity to educate food court patrons on reducing plastic usage and adopting sustainable alternatives.

The initiative highlighted the importance of collective action, with students showcasing hands-on efforts such as rinsing collected plastic cups before placing them in recycling bins. Their commitment not only enhanced their understanding of sustainability but also inspired others in the MMU community to adopt eco-friendly practices.
