  • Traditional knowledge on medicinal plants and their uses in healthcare is poised to disappear soon, if left unchecked.
  • State Tourism, Culture and Environment Datuk Masidi Manjun said that advancement in science and technology had made it easier for people to acquire modern medicines to treat their illnesses.
  • In response to this, the Ministry of Health has actively made steps to ensure the professionalisation of traditional and complementary medicine (TCM) in Malaysia.
  • A good example is the Traditional and Complementary Bill which requires all TCM practitioners to register and meet the minimum qualification. Moreover, it aims to bring Malaysia in the forefront in the move toward traditional and complementary medicine.
  • To date, the MOH has recognised TCM courses being offered by six local universities and university colleges - Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR), International Medical University (IMU), INTI International University, Licoln University College, Cybjerjaya University College of Medical Sciences, and Management & Science University (MSU).
  • As the use of TCM for pain relief gains acceptance worldwide, China has made plans of developing traditional medicine centres in Southeast Asia, the Middle East, Europe and North America.
  • Besides developing traditional medicine talents, these centres will conduct clinic research to help determine which traditional medicine as well as pain management therapies are the most effective in treating various types of pain.
  • In some Asian and African countries, 80% of the population depend on traditional medicine for primary health care. Herbal medicines are the most lucrative form of traditional medicine, generating billions of dollars in revenue.
  • In China, TCM industry is expected to reach US$86 billion by 2015. In addition, the projected growth for TCM will average at 12 percent annually.
