Putrajaya says 1,200 Malaysian students in Christchurch are safe after New Zealand earthquake on Sunday.
The Ministry of Higher Education has issued a statement yesterday confirming the safety of 1,200 students studying at Christchurch after a massive 7.8 magnitude earthquake that hit the region on Sunday.
According to the statement, the offices of Education Malaysia and the Malaysian Embassy in New Zealand have contacted all representatives of students in eight universities after the incident and concluded that all students are safe.
Malaysians in the region are advised to be alert and follow the advice and safety tips issued by the New Zealand Civil Defence department.
The 7.8 earthquake hit the south island killing two and injuring hundreds and causing massive infrastructure damage. Numerous aftershocks have been recorded and nearly 100,000 landslides were caused by the tremor.
Heavy rains is a major obstacle to rescue teams trying to reach hundreds of people still stranded in certain locations. According to The Guardian, authorities in New Zealand say the most likely scenario is that aftershocks will decrease in frequency and intensity within the next 30 days or so.
