The Ministry of Higher Education has assured sponsored students that their monthly stipends will be paid by Friday.

Malaysian students overseas will get paid this week

According to The Malay Mail Online, this assurance was made public in a statement by the Ministry on their official Facebook page after rumours circulated stating that students’ allowances will be delayed.

The Facebook post was published in Bahasa Malaysia saying:

“Kementerian Pendidikan Tinggi (KPT) memberi jaminan bahawa semua pelajar tajaan KPT di luar negara akan menerima elaun sara hidup masing-masing pada minggu ini iaitu selewat-lewatnya pada Jumaat 7 Oktober 2016. Sekian terima kasih.”

It is worth noting that the ministry has not clarified if the initial rumours that went viral were legitimate. The rumours originally started last week claiming that the delay in paying allowances was due to technical difficulties.

According to the statistics provided by the UNESCO's Institute of Statistics, there are more than 50,000 Malaysian students abroad both on government sponsorship and other forms of sponsorship. UK, Australia, US, Egypt and Russia are the top destinations for Malaysian students.
