  • Due to the high cost of living expenses, Malaysian scholars have requested for an allowance increase.
  • According to students, the monthly expenditure was about US$1,200 (RM3,680) but this has gone up to US$1,500.
In one of the websites of Australia's leading institutions of higher education, it is stated that the average international student in Australia spends about USD1,555 a month on accomodation, food, clothing, entertainment, transport, telephone and incidental costs.Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said he would raise the scholars' concerns with the Public Service Department (PSD) and other scholarship sponsors to review this request.

"In Australia, for instance, the dollar is strong and the exchange rate high, so this poses a burden to students," Muhyiddin, who is also education minister, said at a press conference at the end of his nine-day working visit to Australia.
In other news, the government has allocated RM30 million to buid a Malaysia Hall in Western Australia to accomodate the needs of the increasing number of Malaysian students there, said Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin.
The hall would be built in Perth after the ministry received a proposal from the community and 3,000 Malaysian students residing there.
It is the third hall in Australia after Melbourne and Sydney. The facilities of the new hall would include a canteen and library.
