The Malaysian Education Ministry plans to retrain up to 65,000 English teachers nationwide to improve their preparedness to teach the language.
Last year, 5,000 teachers were retrained and 20,000 teachers will undergo the same programme next year.
This series of upskilling programmes began when English subject teachers scored low in the Cambridge Placement Test in 2012. Two-thirds of the 70,000 English teachers in Malaysia failed to reach a proficient English level.
Aside from English, the Education Ministry plans to focus on other subjects such as Science and Mathematics.
