Hopes of having the Unified Examination Certificate (UEC) recognised were put to an end as Ministry of Education confirms its nonrecognition.
Yesterday, Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin confirmed that UEC, which is issued by the Malaysian Independent Chinese Secondary Schools (MICSS), is not a recognised qualification for entry into public institutions of higher learning in Malaysia.
According to Muhyiddin, the teaching and learning systems used by the MICSS do not apply the policies and curriculum of the National Education System.
In early January, government gave two conditions that would make UEC recognised --- adding local content in history and geography subjects and scoring at least a credit in BM in the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination.
Nevertheless, UEC students with a pass in SPM and have fulfill certain conditions can take up Chinese Language studies at the Institute of Teacher Education Malaysia.
UEC is recognised by universities in Singapore, China, Taiwan, Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, the United States and the United Kingdom.
