Low pay in government hospitals was cited as the cause of why many doctors had to perform part-time work after hours.
An expert doctor told Sin Chew Jit Poh, junior doctors working in a government hospital right after graduating from university are categorized into Grade 41 with a monthly salary of approximately RM3,000 only.
"Their salary may be increased up to RM8,000 if they continued their studies to specialize in a particular field.
"It is not rare to find many doctors from government hospitals who are willing to find a part time job at private clinics just to earn more," he said.
According to him, government hospital doctors are allowed to work part-time in private clinics after office hours, however, they must obtain the approval from upper management.
"Before you are allowed to work part-time in a private clinic, a doctor who is still serving in government hospitals must make an application to the Malaysian Medical Council (MMC).
"In addition, the main condition necessary for a part time job in a private clinic is that the doctor must have served at least three years in a government hospital," the paper wrote.
