Despite the rumours of housemanship problems for medicine graduates, the fact is, Malaysia is still in need of more doctors especially for emergency medicine.As reported by BERNAMA, Malaysia needs 900 specialist doctors in emergency medicine to treat the increasing number of patients in our country.
Deputy Health Minister, Dr Hilmi Yahya stated that as for now, Malaysia only have 300 emergency medicine specialists available.
"The reason why the number of emergency medicine specialists is low is because there are only three public universities offering this course; Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), Universiti Malaya (UM) and Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM)."
"Annually 200 applications for this course have been received, however only 60 applicants are selected due to the limited placements in public universities," he added.
Dr Hilmi hoped for more public and private universities would offer this course to curb this problem.
