International Students Given Entry to Malaysia Starting from Jan 1

Kuala Lumpur, 22 Dec – Good news for international students. According to Senior Minister for Security, Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob, international students may enter the country starting from January 1, 2021.

In yesterday’s press conference, the minister went to explain that students who will be eligible for this would be those returning to universities or schools in Malaysia as well as new students who have already received offers from local universities and schools and have already found a permanent accommodation.

However, an entry ban will be extended to those from the United Kingdom – where a new highly infectious strain of Covid-19 emerged recently thus resulting in certain parts of the country being placed under full lockdown.

“The government will not allow students to travel to and from the UK just yet due to the high number of Covid-19 cases there”, said Ismail.

For international students that are planning to enter Malaysia, they must undergo Covid-19 testing three days prior to travelling to Malaysia and must undergo another swab test the minute they arrive at the airport in Malaysia.

Ismail also said international students can be accompanied by a guardian, who must follow the same screening and quarantine requirements.

A detailed SOP will be announced by the Higher Education Ministry soon.
