  • RM1 million budget for translating more academic books into BM
  • Budget is said to motivate full-time and quality translators to help empower the language
More books in Bahasa Malaysia are needed. So an incentive scheme, worth RM1 million, was created to inspire more quality BM translations. The incentive will be managed and disbursed by the Malaysian Institute of Translation and Books (ITBM) and Malaysian Translators Association (PPM).According to Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin during the 2012 National Translators Award yesterday, this would empower the language itself."It will also help create more full-time instead of part-time translators," he said. He added that the scheme would also strengthen the industry in science and technology. "This is in line with the objectives of the Education Ministry in drawing up the Malaysia Education Blueprint 2013-2025 to enhance the quality of our education system to the international level."
The decision to teach mathematics and science in Bahasa Malaysia is in the best interest of the country's 5.3 million students, said Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin. The Deputy Prime Minister said while some parents may object to the move, the government had to consider the interest of the majority of Malaysians.
“This decision was not done in haste. It was done after careful study and consultation with various groups. We did many things before we reached the decision,” he said. He added that despite the decision to scrap PPSMI (Pengajaran dan Pembelajaran Sains dan Matematik dalam Bahasa Inggeris), ensuring that students learnt English was still a priority through the new policy of Upholding Bahasa Malaysia and Upholding English (MBM-MBI), which will be implemented from next year. The abolishment of PPSMI dismayed PAGE chairman Datin Noor Azimah Abdul Rahim. In a previous interview with Star, she was quoted saying that PPSMI is not about learning English. It is about acquiring knowledge in science and technology, in order that the younger generation become better employable, at the very least, and become world-renowned experts in the field.
