Higher Education Ministry introduces Gap Year

Undergraduate students will be able to get a one year study gap to allow students to gain experience and pursue personal interests.

A gap year before enrolling at a higher learning institution in Malaysia has been in discussion for some time and authorities have arrived at a decision. The Higher Education Ministry will implement the Gap Year 2017 programme starting in September to allow undergraduate students to take a gap year from studying to pursue own interests, according to New Straits Times. However, this decision seems to be limited to eight universities.

“These students can take a year off to gain industrial work experience or pursue their interest in arts. The universities can also make it as their programme. It can be a part of the National Service Training Programme,” Higher Education Minister Datuk Idris Jusoh said after delivering a speech at Amanat 2017 at the Putrajaya International Convention Centre.

He had also added that his ministry is looking into working with public service department like the police, Malaysia’s armed forces and the immigration department on the programme.

Among the participating universities in this programme are Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM), Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM) and Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS).

The president of the Student Representative Council at the University of Malaya (UM) Hazwan Syafiq Haznain told NST that this move comes at the right time as students would have more time to gain industrial exposure. This programme gives students the opportunity to gain work experience besides the knowledge earned from books and the classroom. A hands-own experience and critical thinking at real situations are required.

Satesh Kumar Sangar, the vice-president of UPM’s Student Representative Council added that volunteer work can potentially open the opportunities for students to gain exposure in certain areas which would be useful in their studies and future path.
