Grant providers in Malaysia for postgraduate studies

Research grants are financial aid to an institution, a recognized organization or a team of researchers to study on a particular area of subjects.

Here in Malaysia, there are several grant providers that would fund your research, given that your area of study is in their organization’s best interest.

1. MSC Research & Development Grant Scheme

Malaysia National Information & Communication Technology Initiative or MSC Malaysia is one of the biggest research grant providers in Malaysia.

2. Malaysia Toray Science Foundation

Toray has three main areas of grants in Malaysia namely:

  • Science & Technology Award (STA)
  • Science & Technology Research Grant (STRG)
  • Science Education Award (SEA)

3. Intel Research Grants

Intel Malaysia provide grants every year to outstanding talents from various local and private universities throughout the country.

The grant can be in a form of scholarship or an award and it usually focuses on engineering fields like:

  • Electrical and Electronic
  • Computer Science/Engineering
  • Information Technology
  • Mechatronics
  • Physics or Computer Engineering

4. Malaysia Biotechnology Corporation

The organization has been working closely with the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation in having various programs dedicated to improve various areas of biotechnology. Among the programs are:

  • Biotechnology Commercialization Fund (BCF)
  • Bioeconomy Community Development Programme (BCDP)
  • Bio-economy Transformation Program (BTP)

5. National Institute of Occupational Safety & Health (NIOSH)

NIOSH is one of the leading center in occupational safety and health. Any field where there are work hazards would require their approval before any work is started.

6. Malaysia Technology Development Corporation (MTDC)

MTDC is a company owned by Khazanah Nasional Malaysia. Their main areas of business includes Grant Management, Incubation, Advisory, and Nurturing Services.

7. Ministry of Higher Education Malaysia (KPT)

University Malaya and Universiti Teknologi MARA are among the institutions that the ministry would normally give the grants to.

8. Ministry of Science, Technology & Innovation (MOSTI)

  • InnoFund: For the development or improvement of new or existing products, processes or services.
  • TechnoFund: A grant scheme which aims to stimulate the growth and successful innovation of Malaysian enterprises.
  • ScienceFund: A grant provided by Government to carry out R&D projects that can contribute to the discovery of new ideas and the advancement of knowledge in applied sciences.

9. Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA)

MIDA assists companies which intend to invest in the manufacturing and services sectors. Most of MIDA's R&D activities are in the areas of electrical and electronics, machinery and equipment, chemical, medical and aerospace.

10. Majlis Kanser Nasional (MAKNA) or the National Cancer Council

MAKNA prides itself as a home grown organisation that continues to play an important part helping cancer patients, regardless of background, race, creed, colour and station.

Their commitment to the discovery of cures or treatments for cancer has lead them to the release of The Cancer Research Award.
