Government plans to increase the number of students in international schools to 75,000 by 2020
- Government plans to increase the number of students in international schools to 75,000 by 2020. Currently there are 27,000 students of which 15,772 are foreign and 11,278 are local students.
- The number of international schools is expected to exceed government's target of 84 schools by 2020. There are 70 schools in operation and 24 more licenses have been approved.
- Early this year, government abolished 40% quota for locals to enroll in international schools.
- Education Minister said the decision to abolish the quota will not affect national schools and national-type schools enrolment because international school's fees are high and they have limited capacity
- He said the move would make Malaysia a major education hub in the region and will stop parents sending their kids to Singapore or other countries.
