  • Government is planning to shorten the duration as well as widen the range of certificate courses being offered by community colleges in the country.
  • There are 82 community colleges spread out in Perlis, Penang, Kedah, Perak, Melaka, Johor, Selangor, Pahang, Kelantan, Sarawak, Terengganu, Sabah, and Negeri Sembilan

According to Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin, as quoted by Kosmo, the effort includes shortening the period of study from 24 months to a minimum of 16 months as well as increase the number of certificate courses from four last year to 11 this year.

Previously only Selayang Community College offers special skills certificate for the service industry. The minister said that the five more community colleges will be offering courses covering information technology, photography, fashion and apparel, food processing and pastries.

Moreover, special courses for students with learning disabilities (specifically for the mute and deaf) will also be included this year.

The Department of Community College Education (or JPKK) is in-charge of providing vocational-based training programmes leading to a certificate qualification for those who do not want an academic pathway.

To date there are 82 community colleges in the country. Unlike four-year institutions, community colleges enrol more students from low-income families and train students for a wide variety of occupations. To view the complete directory of community colleges, click HERE
