  • In order to have fun at work, students need to find jobs that match their character and strengths.
  • Identifying these signature strengths and applying these at work could bring out a fulfilled sense of purpose.

A recent study carried out in the University of Zurich found out that a particular job has to suit the person’s needs and uses their strengths such as self-control, teamwork or kindness in order to bring out happiness at work. The authors, Claudia Harzer and Professor Willibald Ruch said that people typically have three to seven signature strengths and jobs utilising their specific strength gives them job satisfaction and a fulfilled sense of purpose.

The research was divided into two studies, one where 1,000 workers were surveyed about their character strengths and whether they are able to apply them at work and how positive they feel about it. The second study analysed how these test subjects rate the applicability of their peers’ character strengths.

The studies found out that people who can apply four or more signature strengths in their jobs perceive their work as meaningful and are satisfied with what they are doing.

Harzer and Ruch believe their findings will be useful in selecting employees, helpful in human resources development and workplace design.

“If it is clarified which character strengths are central for the job before a position is filled, a person can be recruited based on these strengths,” Harzer said. “Employers and employees only stand to benefit from this.”
