The creation of Sixth Form Centres (Pusat Tingkatan Enam/PTE) can improve the position of the educational system to be on par with the matriculation and diploma programmes in higher education institutions, both public and private.
Former Director General of Education Tan Sri Alimuddin Mohd Dom said the initiative is a good step towards a more competitive Form Six education, thus able to produce viable and knowledgeable pre-university students (pre-U).
This will attract SPM graduates to continue their studies in the Sixth Form, and change the negative perception that the education system is considered just like ordinary day schools, he said.
The Sixth Form Centres will be fully segregated from mainstream schools gradually through three modes.
Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said after the end of the three modes, there should be at least one PTE operating within each District Education Office.
