The debate on the recognition of the Chinese school Unified Examination Certificate (UEC) continues.

Sarawak Chief Minister Tan Sri Adenan Satem voiced his disagreement  to Putrajaya’s stance on not recognising the UEC for not following the national education curriculum.

Speaking at the Sarawak Economic Development Corporation (SEDC) Integrity Day on Wednesday, he said it did not make sense for the government to disregard the UEC as “numerous countries all over the world recognise the UEC”.

Universities such as Oxford recognises the UEC.  Recently, Universiti Selangor (Unisel) has also announced that it would recognise the UEC to respond to the increasing brain drain in Malaysia.

He said that Sarawak would lose talent to countries like Singapore with such a policy. “If there is no recognition here, then UEC graduates will go overseas to study and stay back and work there, causing a brain drain here.”
