Allianze University College of Medical Sciences (AUCMS) will launch its dental faculty and clinic this September. Bringing 37 years of experience in dentistry, Dr Noor Hashim Pawan, former chairman of the Oral health Division in the Health Ministry in Penang, will be heading this programme.
Located at the former Seberang Perai Municipal Council (MPSP) building in Jalan Datuk, the renovation of the building that will house the dental faculty and clinic is estimated at RM10 million to RM15 million. It has six classrooms, a library, an operating theatre and labs, hostel facilities for students, a canteen and an administrative office at the dental faculty.
The building is at the heart of Butterworth town, ideal for giving dental care for the public.
According to Prof. Dr Hashimi Bohari, AUCMS is still waiting for the Education Ministry's final approval. The faculty is already 90 per cent ready and 100 dental chairs have been applied for the dental clinic, which would be run by the faculty's lecturers.
The faculty can accommodate up to 100 students. First and second year students will be exposed to theory-based learning while third to fifth year students will get to practise surgery, anaesthesia and other procedures, added Dr Noor Hashim.
By end of this year, AUCMS will set up three more branch campuses in Kangar, Kulim and Taiping and three more in Cambodia, Laos and in the Middlesex College in London.
