  • Business, Health, Communication & Journalism, and Computer & Information Sciences were the most preferred courses in the US in 2009, according to Newsweek Magazine.
  • The comparison of popular courses between 1970 and 2009 showed Business with a 22% popularity rate compared to 14% in 1970.
  • After Business, the fields of study round out the most popular majors for bachelor's degree students were Health, Psychology, Communication/Journalism, Engineering, Visual and Performing Arts, Liberal Arts and Psychology.
  • Students' interest in taking up Business may be based on the simple truth that every organisation, regardless of industry, relies on business principles to prosper. Hence, the course could be taken as a practical choice.
  • Traditional majors such as English and Literature and Education showed signs of weakness as more students opt for new age courses such as Computer and Information Science, Biological and Biomedical Science and Law Enforcement.
  • Likewise in Malaysia, Business appears to be the most favoured major among students in a 2011 survey commissioned by the Ministry of Higher Education. Social Science and Law were the second favourites among students surveyed. See chart below:
