A study conducted by the Malaysian Employers Federation (MEF) found that 60 per cent of its members regard young recruits as weak in the mastery of the English language. A review by Jobstreet also found that 55 per cent of employers in this country believe the main cause of unemployment among university students is due to being weak in the global language.

The attitude of the students, their peers and parents have been pointed as being the main influences in the deteriorating standards of the English language among Malaysian students.

Head of UPM's English Department, Faculty of Modern Languages and Communication, Dr Sabariah Md Rashid said that students who try to practice using the English language is often made fun of causing their learning spirit to fade and eventually disappear.

Aiming not only for students about to face MUET, the group is also open to those keen on practicing the use of English among friendly faces.

Afterschool.my, the main reference portal for SPM leavers and pre-university students in the country, has taken advantage of the social juggernaut Facebook, as a platform for the students to be able to practice the use of English in a safe and open environment.

Users who already have an existing account on Facebook need only to enter the name “Mastering MUET for Malaysian Students” (MMFMS) in the search bar and click the "Join" button when it appears.

Group admins will ensure that only legitimate Facebook profiles are allowed to join. They are also responsible for ensuring that cyberbullying does not occur within members of the group.

Members of the group are free to share information and practice, improve and promote the use of English among themselves. In fact, the topics of discussion are varied and not limited to academic issues and learning tips only, but also includes current news and issues of interest.
