  • 400 former Serdang college graduates have finally received their diploma in Agriculture after 38 years
  • Possibly the first of its kind and perhaps a record in the Malaysia Guinness Book to have matured graduates

While most of us cringe at the thought of spending another three to four years to finish college, a batch of 400 former Serdang College graduates had to wait 38 years to receive their diploma in agriculture.

Although it was justice delayed, the event helped marke the end of the decades of misgivings, insinuation and unfinished business that has plagued the old retired graduates when they received their certificates.

When Serdang College was elevated to university status, now known as University Pertanian Malaysia, its then principal, Prof. Rashdan was promoted as the first vice chancellor, however, he decided to suspend the graduation ceremony for the diploma students from 1974 to 1976 for unconfirmed reasons. For years, the alumni association pursued the universitiy authorities for years to grant them the deserved recognition and graduation ceremony. The credit goes to Tan Sri Prof Mohd Nor Ismail, the former deputy vice chancellor, as well as officials such as Dr Jamal Talib, Azami Hussin, Datuk Masitah Ibrahim, Dr Ibrahim Mohamad and Anas Nasaruddin.

Johnson Koh, one of the graduates and Director of Sunsea Development Sdn Bhd, said this is probably the first of its kind and perhaps a record in the Malaysia Guiness Book to see 400 matured graduates and their family members attending the formal ceremony.

“However, it was sad to note that some of the graduates have passed on, retired, some came in wheelchairs while some were unable to attend the ceremony. Some brought their grown up children and grandchildren to witness the ceremony,” added Koh.
