The Covid-19 pandemic has drastically affected many people’s lives. University students had to adjust to learning online while still paying their full university fees despite not using any of their on-campus facilities. Recently it was announced that the government’s RM185.7mil fee reduction initiative will benefit 386,142 students of public universities in the country.
It was stated by the Higher Education Ministry that there was a reduction between 10% and 35% given after a circular was issued on March 22 by the Higher Education Department to public universities (UA).
The statement that was released on July 16 said that “The fee discount covers for service, hostel, convocation and college activities for Malaysian students in the second semester of 2019/2020 academic session and will be extended to Malaysian students in semester two of the 2020/2021 academic session.”
Furthermore, the reduction for the second semester of the 2019/2020 academic session is a combined RM75mil, with RM55mil from UA’s internal resources and RM20mil from an additional government allocation.
The MOHE added that this move was following the government’s concern in addressing the financial burden that many student and parents across the country are facing.
