3 Polytechnics to Offer Degree Courses by Year End

  • 3 premier polytechnics will start offering degree courses from end of this year. They are Ungku Omar Polytechnic in Ipoh, Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah Polytechnic in Shah Alam and Polytechnic Ibrahim Sultan in Johor. Initially the programs offered at degree level will in the fields of engineering, commerce and services.
  • This is because many polytechnic students who have graduated with diplomas are unable to secure places in public universities. Only 3,000 polytechnic students of the 12,000 are able to get into public universities every year.
  • Currently there are 94,000 students pursuing certificate, diploma and advanced diplomas in 30 polytechnics nationwide.
  • 253,012 SPM school leavers applied to polytechnics but only 15,850 were offered seats.
