The programme at USM is structured so as to develop the above skills. The core physics and mathematics courses provide the student with the fundamental principles and theoretical tools which are essential for the understanding of any system as well as the development of analytical and problem solving ability. In order that the student can relate the above knowledge to the attitudes and requirements of engineering disciplines, students are also taught the methods employed by professional engineers in a set of engineering courses. The design abilities required by a practising engineer are developed in laboratory work as well as related courses throughout the programme. In the final year, students are required to complete a project that involves the presentation of solutions to a real design problem, the type a practising engineering physicist is likely to encounter.
