About Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) Universiti Malaysia Terengganu was first formed as Universiti Putra Malaysia’s Fishery and Marine Science Centre in Mengabang Telipot in 1979. UPM decided to establish a branch campus in Mengabang Telipot in 1996 and it was named Universiti Putra Malaysia Terengganu (UPMT). UPMT became Kolej Universiti Terengganu (KUT) on 1999, which was subsequently renamed Kolej Universiti Sains dan Teknologi Malaysia (KUSTEM) when it officially became the 14th public institution of higher learning in Malaysia in 2001. In 2007, KUSTEM was renamed Universiti Malaysia Terengganu. There are currently five faculties in UMT which specialises in Science and Technology, Management and Economics, Agrotechnology and Food Science, Maritime Studies and Marine Science as well as Social Development. UMT continues to be a public university that emphasises on Science, Technology and Natural Resources Management. Graduates from UMT are expected to possess a high degree of professionalism and self-discipline as courses and research conducted are sensitive to ideas in management and responsive to current changes in the industry.
