Universiti Malaysia Pahang (UMP) was established as a public technical university by the Malaysian government on 16 February 2002. Incorporated under the Universities and University Colleges Act 1971 by the Royal Decree of His Majesty the Yang DiPertuan Agong. Kolej Universiti Kejuruteran & Teknologi Malaysia (KUKTEM) was set up as a competency-based technical university, specialising in engineering and technology. Renamed to University Malaysia Pahang in 2006, the university produces competent graduates across the country as well as the international field. Programmes UMP has 17 departments and 7 faculties with academic programmes specialising in engineering, technology and industrial sciences. The university uses state-of-the art facilities that are similar to those used in industry and operates with 2 campuses in Gambang and Pekan.
