Nutrition Science covers a variety of disciplines that provide an understanding of how dietary intake influences human health. Students gain a strong base in nutritional sciences and an understanding of how food is produced and processed, how nutrients can be obtained from food, and the metabolic consequences of taking a variety of foods and its effects on health.
This is based on sound understanding of the biological sciences, including subjects such as biochemistry, anatomy, and physiology of the human body. The course also looks at social and psychological factors that influence food choices.
The UKM Nutrition Science undergraduate programme is conducted over a period of four years. It is an integration of the physical, biological, and social sciences disciplines, with the final goal being good nutrition and optimal health for the population. The programme also incorporates an honours level research and hands-on experience, which students get to experience during their industrial training.
The Nutritional Sciences Programme aims to produce nutrition graduates with adequate understanding of the sources and functions of food, nutrient requirements, social and psychological influences and their ultimate impact on health of individuals and the community. Graduates will be able to consider careers as nutritionists in the public health sector or the food and health industry, and also as researchers in various areas of nutritional sciences.
